Fire Safety in Silver
Living in Silver Knolls means enjoying wide open spaces, big skies, and the beauty of Nevada’s high desert—but it also means living with wildfire risk. As a recognized FireWise Community, we are committed to working together to reduce fire hazards, protect our homes, and keep our neighborhood safe. From creating defensible space around your property to logging volunteer hours that help us qualify for grants, every action matters. This page is your hub for fire safety tips, resources, and updates on how we can all do our part to stay FireWise.
Report Your Hours
Did you clear brush, trim trees, or do fire-prep work on your property? Every hour counts! These hours are logged toward our FireWise status and can help us qualify for grants.

On Your Property: Creating Defensible Space
Wildfire prevention starts at home. By reducing fuels around your property, you give firefighters a better chance to protect your home.
-
Clear dry grass, weeds, and dead vegetation within 30–100 ft of your home.
-
Trim trees and bushes near roofs, fences, and outbuildings.
-
Keep roofs and gutters free of pine needles and leaves.
-
Store firewood and propane at least 30 ft away from your house.
-
Mow only during cool, calm conditions—never on hot, windy days.

Emergency Preparedness: Be Ready to Go
Wildfires can move quickly—don’t wait until it’s too late.
-
Pack a Go Bag with important documents, medications, clothing, and pet supplies.
-
Know two ways out of the neighborhood.
-
Create a family evacuation and communication plan.
-
Stay informed about Red Flag Warnings and fire weather alerts.
Get Involved: FireWise Committee
Fire safety is a community effort, and we need more neighbors to step up.
Joining the FireWise Committee means just 1–2 hours a month but has a big impact:
-
Represent Silver Knolls at wildfire planning meetings.
-
Advocate for more resources like fire hydrants, evacuation roads, and a fully staffed firehouse.
-
Help qualify our neighborhood for grants that offset green waste disposal and support defensible space projects.
