Silver Knolls Needs You: Help Keep Our Community FireWise & Represented

Silver Knolls is officially a FireWise Community, thanks in large part to the tireless efforts of Jan Bishop, who has worked hard to keep us informed, prepared, and connected to critical wildfire safety efforts.
But wildfire preparation shouldn’t fall on one person alone. With wildfire risks growing across Reno and surrounding areas, we need more neighbors to step up. That’s why we’re forming a FireWise Committee — a small team of residents who can help guide our community’s fire preparedness and keep Silver Knolls represented in important conversations about safety, funding, and resources.
💡 Why FireWise Matters for Silver Knolls
Living on 1+ acre lots means we all share responsibility for keeping our homes and each other safe. FireWise participation helps us:
On Your Property:
Clear defensible space (dry grass, weeds, pine needles, branches).
Trim trees and bushes near roofs and outbuildings.
Keep roofs and gutters clear.
Store firewood and propane at least 30 ft from structures.
Mow safely (not on hot, windy days).
For Our Community:
Annual Green Waste Days reduce fuels.
Logged volunteer hours count toward our FireWise status (report here: Log Your FireWise Hours).
Preparedness helps us qualify for grants, resources, and training.
🎯 Why Join the FireWise Committee?
📌 Time commitment: 1–2 hours a month🌟 Impact: HUGE — both short- and long-term
In the long term, your involvement could help us:
Push for additional evacuation roads
Advocate for fire hydrants
Strengthen the case for a fully staffed firehouse in Silver Knolls
In the short term, committee work could help us qualify for grants to:
Participate in evacuation planning (e.g., what if Red Rock Road is blocked?)
Support neighbors with defensible space or tree removal
Offset green waste disposal costs
We don’t need experts — we need neighbors who care and are willing to help us stay proactive and protected.
